Circus of Souls How I Discovered We are All Freaks Passing as Normal At the beginning of the publicity tour for her National Best-Selling Book Songs of the Gorilla Nation My Journey through Autism, Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes believed she might be seen by the sensational media amd the public alike as a kind of modern day freak, much as the old-time side show denizens Percilla Monkey Girl, Grace the Mule-Faced Woman, or Millie Christine the Two-Headed Nightingale. What she found instead was that, like her, everyone she met on the tour – no matter how “normal” – had deep disfigurements and spiritual twisting that they tried to hide while longing to be loved. This book tells those stories, interweaving the history of the American freak show, and questions ideas of normalcy, freakishness, and disability.

I very much enjoyed Prince-Hughes' use of pictures, some of which I had never seen. I used this book in a Summer independent study on passing. She did a great job of showing the narratives of many different people and showing how they were all passing in one way or another. Sometimes the narratives dovetailed beautifully together and a couple of times the comparisons were a bit of a reach. All in all, I came away from the book wishing that she had spoken at greater length about some things. There wasn't much I could use, but I felt that she knew more than most of the people I had studied in this Summer project. I was a little frustrated. Yet it was an enjoyable book. I couldn't put it down. If you would like to be "gently informed," with a non-fiction book that reads like a novel, this book would be a great choice.I would categorize this book as an autoethnography because it is self-reflective while reporting on other events.

Circus of Souls How I Discovered We are All Freaks Passing as Normal Dawn PrinceHughes 9781484114629 Books Reviews
Dawn give us an extraordinarily sensitive view of our struggle to have meaningful relationships with others; and when they cause us to put up a wall, how that affects our view of ourselves. The metaphor and the reality of the Circus of our Souls!
Dawn Prince-Hughes writes with a style that borders on the poetic. I found it difficult to lay the book down. Her insight into the human spirit is detailed, compassionate, and above all honest. We are all freaks in our own way and she gives us permission to embrace those things that connect us to all of humanity and to life in all its forms.
Comfortable in her own skin, Dawn shares her acceptance of all, by opening our eyes to see the beholders vision of beauty. Each page, well researched, riveting with mind stirring and heart snatching phrases, pull the reader further into Dawn's view of mankind/womankind/allkind. The soul stretching prose invite us to consider others past their skin and into their souls. Thank you immensely, neighbor, for this marvelous read!
